How to Find Funded PhD Positions in Computer Science and Engineering

Strategies for finding fully funded PhD positions in CS, engineering, and related STEM fields: where to search, how to evaluate programs, and tips for a successful application.

Computer Science and Engineering are among the most active fields for funded PhD positions. Demand for doctoral researchers in AI, cybersecurity, software engineering, robotics, and related areas has never been higher.

Where Funded PhDs in CS/Engineering Are Found

1. University Job Portals

Most research universities list funded PhD positions on their HR or faculty job pages. Key profiles to check:

  • USA: Stanford, MIT, CMU, Berkeley — all have dedicated academic job portals
  • UK: Imperial, Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh — jobs.ac.uk is the central hub
  • Germany: TUM, RWTH Aachen, TU Berlin, Max Planck Institutes — these post vacancies on their own sites
  • Netherlands: TU Delft, TU Eindhoven, UvA — use academictransfer.com
  • Switzerland: ETH Zurich, EPFL — post on their job portals
  • 2. Centralised Job Boards

  • EURAXESS: The European Commission's job portal for researchers. Filter by PhD and your field
  • Academic Positions: Lists PhDs worldwide with field filters
  • ScholarshipPortal / MastersPortal: Aggregated listings for scholarships and PhDs
  • 3. Direct Lab Pages

The most effective approach: identify 20–30 labs whose research aligns with yours and check their websites every few weeks. Many labs post openings only on their own group page.

    4. Conference and Mailing Lists

Major conferences in your field (NeurIPS, CVPR, ICSE, SIGCOMM) often have job boards. Mailing lists circulate PhD position announcements.

    US vs Europe Funding Models

    United States

Most US PhD programs admit to the department, not a specific advisor. Funding comes as a teaching or research assistantship.

  • Apply by December for Fall admission
  • Most programs cover tuition plus stipend of $30k to $45k/year
  • GRE is increasingly optional at top programs
  • Funding decisions made by the admissions committee
  • Europe

European PhDs are often advertised as specific positions. You apply for a job with a defined project and supervisor.

  • Positions are posted year-round as funding becomes available
  • Salary is typically 35k to 55k EUR/year (gross) depending on country
  • You usually need a Master's degree
  • The interview process includes meetings with the research group
  • Skills That Attract Funding

PhD funding is most readily available for students with skills that labs need immediately:

  • Machine learning and AI: PyTorch, TensorFlow, deep learning theory
  • Software engineering: Large-scale systems, testing, empirical methods
  • Robotics: ROS, control systems, computer vision
  • Security: Cryptography, network security, formal verification
  • Programming languages: Compilers, static analysis, PL theory
  • Having a publication record (even a workshop paper) significantly increases your chances of funding.

    Timeline

  • 6 to 12 months before: Identify labs, read papers, build skills
  • 3 to 6 months before: Contact professors, prepare applications
  • 1 to 3 months before: Submit applications
  • After acceptance: Confirm funding package, arrange visa
  • CS and Engineering remain among the best-funded fields for doctoral study. With the right preparation and a systematic search, fully funded positions are widely available.
